 I have a dimmer switch with L1 and L2 at the bottom of the switch and light bulb symbol (3) at the top.
Would I be correct to wire L1 and the Lightbulb switch.

(I do not have the wiring instructions)

Probably, recently someone appears to have decided to swap L1 and L2 round. it will not do your switch any harm if you get it the wrong way round

I get the feeling I probably did not word this right.
I wish to replace an existing light switch which has the red cable connected to the top and the black at the bottom. When I install the dimmer switch which cable goes where. (I Have L1 and L2 connectors at the bottom of the dimmer and a lightbulb symbol marked 3 at the top.

Thanks

so long as one is in the top and one is in L1 it makes no difference.
some could argue the black should go in the one with the lamp symbol and the red in L1

makes no difference really
