do those screwfix joist/pipe/electricity detectors work?

i got one of those triple detectors at the weekend (part nmumber 16093).
i can't seem to get it to work. i followed the instructions, turned the adjustment screw etc but the buzzer never goes off.
is this dection an exact science or is always this hit and miss. can any1 recommend *another* model that I could check out?

yes they do work, i have got a metel/voltage & stud detector. got it from B&Q make draper / stock no 26920 cost me £15, works great,

I have the screwfix one and have no real problems with it ....can be a bit sensitive at times. I'd send it back!
