Do you like the job you do?. What is the boss like? I work for a company that inspects power lines and take teams to any problem areas. We work all over the UK and also in other European countries from time to time. The boss is a really laid back kind of man and the money is good to. It can be a mad job sometimes but then again I guess we can all say that!.

I absolutely love my job. Maintenance person in a dementia and nursing home. When I first started there, I didn't realise how many courses I'd have to do, which aren't strictly related to the maintenance side of things:- Infection control, People moving and handling, Dementia awareness Safeguarding vulnerable adults, amongst other things.
I have daily, weekly and monthly checks to complete and record. Residents needs have to be considered when planning things in advance. Then there are the reactive maintenance issues that crop up.
The best part is undoubtedly the residents themselves. A nicer bunch of people I have yet to meet. They all have their own problems, both physical and mental. I often stay behind after my shift just to sit and talk with them, perhaps play a few games , cards/dominoes etc with them, or just sit and chat. Only today I finished at half past two and didn't leave until around four o clock.
Hardest part is when a resident passes away. I find that although one has to try and maintain a professional attitude and manner, it can be very emotional.
I'm on 24 hr call out, just in case anything goes wrong or breaks down, but still find I call in most weekends just for a chat and a cuppa with the old un's, even if it's only for half an hour or so. The job is just so rewarding.

Hi there John. Reading your post it's obvious you get a great deal of satisfaction with your job , and that comes over in the way you described it. I would imagine it can be very trying at times but also incredibly rewarding. I love my job but it can be very boring..................not so with yours I imagine !

I love my job, conservation of Scotlands finest scheduled buildings and monuments- employed as a stonemason but get to do plenty of other work with it. Boss is sound too and a small squad that works well with each other. Good hours, pension and holidays(42 inc public hols per year) whenever we want them, even with no notice I could get tomorrow off if I wanted. But we play fair and if there's a time pressured job on we would give appropriate notice. Also 6 months full pay (if off on the sick that long). God bless the public sector....

Could do with something closer to home(I moved house, my choice), but in this present climate and locally where I now live there's jack s*it going that compares....better the devil I know! Don't ever want an indoors/deskjob either, I love being outside and seeing the seasons change!

Self employed now after 26 years with a company before being made redundant. Property developing on my tod, also a foster carer, just had a lovely couple of kids adopted after 18months with us, severely neglected, two more due tomorrow if the judge is sensible and removes them from parents, severe neglect again, people can be cruel.

Nah Caoinead. Every day is different. Sat with one resident today for a while, who's not doing too well (health wise) and quite upset me to see her this way.
However, I have known residents to look as though they are at death's door and next day I've gone in and their up and about, like they were never ill.
Been to a fair few funerals as well (just to say my last respects to ones we've lost) But all in all, I reckon it's a very satisfying job. ;) ;)

ABC Warrior, your job sounds fantastic. Keeping our heritage alive. ;) ;) ;)

No pressure, my immediate boss is great as his is manager

Got hour and half commute each way but don't mind as get chance to read or listen to some music - NHS job was 5 minutes walk away
