Doubling or tripling joists

How do you double or triple up existing joists? Do you have to build them into the wall at each end next to the exisitng joist or do you just cut the additional joists to fit in the clear opening and bolt them to the main existing joist?
 
The additional joists need to have their own bearing, so you need to build them in or hang them off hangers - if appropriate.
 
As woodster says build them in and connect all of them together. Remember to use double sided timber connectors.
