I have a small downstairs WC and just today the toilet and sink do not empty. Whenever we flush an upstairs toilet both the loo and sink downstairs gurgle and splutter like a bad case of indigestion, but the level of water never goes down (always half-ish full). The upstairs toilets have no problem.

Any ideas what this may be and what I should do? Thanks in advance

Thanks Kevplumb - without wishing to sound too thick, what do you mean by this? Inspection chamber?

Yeah - inspection chamber is best! I have one in my back garden, so torch in hand off I go....not sure what I'm looking for but we'll see.

get your self some drain rods point them toword the house (in the inspection chamber) when they stop moving in and start moving back out
RUN SIDEWAYS

Now I understand! Several years ago I rented a very old basement flat with the inspection chamber under the front room floor - blocked by a nappy from the upstairs tenent. The lid nearly blew off when a friend and I opened it and the smell was horrific. We spent a large part of the day breaking the 'mess' up with spades then bagging it before a rod could get down the pipe.

Worst day's work of my life!

hence run sideways when i was an apprentice i got the job 3 storey resturaunt in brum needless to say i ran in the general direction of flow

walked back to the digs that night

they wouldnt let me in the van
