I am on Win XP. I have a (second hand) DVD-ROM drive on my PC. I did not get any drivers or software with it, but it works OK for CDs. When I put a DVD in it, it identifies the name of the film, and asks if i want to play it with realplayer or Windows media.

When i try, Windows media tells me
"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer"

is this something i can download?

I can't see a maker's name on the front of the drive but Device Manager says it is a Sony DVD-ROM DDU1615

You need a DVD player application - the kind you get when you buy a DVD drive.

Your best bet is to buy a software package that includes a DVD Player of sorts (see links below) although if you have an Nvidia graphics card then consider their DVD decoder that integrates with Windows Media Player - Click Here

CyberLink Power DVD 7 - Click Here

Nero 7 - Click Here

Hope that helps :D

Thanks, i have a radeon AGP graphics card. i have seen some hardware DVD decoder cards, puzzled that some decoders appear to be software

Not sure that i want to spend much as I have a DVD recorder hooked up to the telly and sound just a few yards from the PC.
