Moving into a house soon and wanted to ask a question if the electricity meter is a pre payment one first before I look silly and ask for them to ensure the key is available, as I have never seen or used one. Or is is just a normal meter and not a pre payment one. The gas is just a normal meter.

If this is a rental propertycheck with your landlord first.

Tip one, ensure there is no dept on the meter otherwise you will be liable for it once you move in.
Tip two, definitly include the key in paperwork prior to moving in, replacements are available but are often posted out and can take several days.

If you have no credit issues, especially if you already have an account elsewhere there should not be an issue with changing to a credit meter, just like the gas.
Set the wheels in motion before you move to save time after, very likely you will end up with a smart meter.

I got the impression this is a keyless meter - using SMS messaging for top-up. Could be wrong.

If it is topped up by text or key get it changed. Any debt is either on the key or somehow loaded into the text top ups. Basically any credit you add is diluted by an amount of debt subtraction e.g £5 credit results in £4.50 worth of electricity.

Just been through this a key meter when a tenant moved out, agent read the meter and logged it as being in credit by something like £2. that was correct, there was that amount of credit available to use however the debt of ~£30 [which should have been retained from deposit] went unnoticed. Adding £5 to the meter only added £3.63 of leccy. I get the impression more is taken for the debt as it gets bigger.
