Dear forum
Can anyone tell me the procedure for converting or utilising an existing street light (adjacent to my Daughters on street car parking bay) into an EV charging point, I understand there is active encouragement by local authorities to provide on street EV charging facilities, And in fact I almost won the contract for undertaking the "Civils" work with Brighton and Hove council who were converting over 200 street lights into on street charging points.
The parking bay is an specifically allocated parking bay to the housing association home, what I suppose advice I am after is a feasibility approach so on behalf of my daughter I can talk sensibly with whoever to see if this can be done...also the practicalities and electrical procedures would benefit me in my approach.
I know it sounds unrealistic but there is an absolute dedication for providing EV charging point by our councils.

You will need to talk to the DNO for the area to ensure that the DNO's cutout in the lamp post would be able to supply the necessary amperage on the existing cables. If not then it will be an expensive new supply by the DNO digging and connecting.

Most lamp posts are fused at 6 Amps , some may have larger fuses but these are left over from the times before LED lamps were fitted.

You will also have to arrange for a metering system or maybe opt for an un-metered supply where you predict / calculate how much power will be used and the supplier bills you for that amount.

We use un-metered supply from lamp posts for the village Christmas Illuminations and the Christmas Fayre, there is no way they would supply an EV charger

Over a year ago, wonder what the outcome was, I look at this village also in Powys, and the number of properties where the cars are parked on the street, in many cases there was never a provision to park a car, but some the car parking space has been made into a room, and the drive to the old garage far too steep to park on, and cars and vans are parked where I am sure no one would give official permission to park there.

Unlike larger towns, there is not public transport which could be used by people working, retired could do their shopping, but first and last bus times means public transport is a non starter.

So I can see a problem arising in the future. Where I work we have two charging points, and one employee uses it to charge her car, and she has no ability to charge it at home, but this may work now, but as more want to use public charging points it will become a problem.

So would be interesting to hear how @russellsmiler got on?

why should councils provide charging points?? councils dont provide petrol / diesel filling points. let the power companies provide the points as they are the supplier of the "fuel"

Probably because EV is a Government initiative. I.e. YOU have to pay for it.
