just a thought [ get em now and then ] if you split a single pipe exhaust at back of car [ most cars ] and put another pipe other side, would it make any difference to the mot test emisions ?. regards. r.r.

It shouldn't do.

The meter read parts per million (i think) so it will sample as much as it can fit in its own nozzle.

The number of created particles is set by the swept capacity of the engine and its condition, which it will promptly dump down the exhaust.
The volume of the exhaust system will be filled up fairly quickly and will expel any 'fresh' air.

Having a bigger exhaust with more outlets just helps to get rid of those nasty gases more quickly.

There are tuning parts out there that will allow you to switch exhaust gases from a standard system to a set of sidepipes but these are generally for cars that have to be road legal for getting to the circuit and can then be changed to the race setup. Mr MOT is gonna get pretty
p!ssed if you pull this trick on him when he probes your roadgoing tailpipe
the change in noise will be a bit of a giveaway as well.

thanks for reply .r-gamma, :) it was most helpfull/ and explained the workings of the exhaust system fully, car has only just had mot so no bother there.
i just thought if it was done like that and split into 2 it would maybe affect the emission results, in favour of the car owner. :) a bit like replacing a single water tap with a double one, and thus affecting the water pressure output .
i dont suppose mot tester would be to happy but it would be street legal, as long as insurence were imformed. . cheers anyway. r.r.

as far as I know the UK hasn't introduced noise testing for exhaust systems yet as per Switzerland or USA.

advisable to have it exiting from the opposite side to the pavement so that you don't BBQ Jo/Joanna Public when you floor it.

:) ya thanks for your reply/ r.gamma.
as i said it was just a thought, im not thinking of doing it.
as i said i was more intrested in how it would effect exhaust reading at mot.
i suppose at end of the day if the examiner stuffed a rag up the second pipe -he would get a normal reading anyway.
might look good on some cars with a bit of chrome added, but not on my 93 escort saloon. :) regards. r.r.

you can fail a car (or at least i can :) ) if the exhaust system is excessively noisy compared to the noise level you would expect from a similar make/model of car.

testers manual section 6.2, reason for rejection 2

intresting reply davieboy, on my last car orion 1600cc [ forgot the yr ] i had a stateside cherry bomb box , replacing the rear silencer box and it went through 3 mot,s with it on and no bother. i might add the place i went was very strict / i went there because i knew the car would get a good going over and be reasonably safe to drive .
dont know if youve heard a cherrybomb but believe me there a great sound but boy are they noisey :) .regards. r.r.
