Hi - I've not much experience doing DIY (as you will gather by my post), but in our new, first house -- after some research -- I've begun removing the plaster from our fireplace/chimney breast.

I intended to remove the plaster to the ceiling, but at this stage, I quite like the look with the top section still plastered (see picture). However, I wondered how I could support the plaster, which extends for 1.5cm beyond the brickwork. Is there something I could do with this (assuming even with full replastering, there would still be an overhang), or would the best plan just be to keep on until the whole chimney breast is stripped?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be very welcome!

Many thanks,

Laurence

There are a couple things that can be done.
*You could tidy the edge up with a thin coat stop bead, this would require racking some of the plaster finish off and blending in to make good.
* or (my personal preference) Tidy the edge up with mortar, so you have chamfered joint all way round.
