Have a reciprocating saw which i wanted to use at the bottom of the garden to cut up some logs. The saw works fine when plugged in the house, The extension cable I have to use to reach the bottom of the garden (one desigend for use outside) works fine on all other electrical equipment (shredder, blowervac etc) however the saw just won't work on the extension. It doesn't trip the RCD or blow a fuse or cut out - it just doesn't work.

Any ideas why not - and what I could try to get it working on the extension?

Thanks.

Sounds like an issue with volts drop.

Your saw will take quite a bit of power initially to start it turning.

This will possibly make the voltage drop too low to start the saw due to the additional resistance of the long extention lead.
