I have a ceiling extractor fan in my windowless WC which needs replacing. The current fan is a vectaire timer type which is connected to an isolator switch and also operates when the light is switched. The current fan is connected to an incoming cable that has red, blue and yellow wiring. The fan has blue, brown and black. The cable and fan are connected as follows blue to blue brown to red and yellow to black.
What would I need to purchase as a replacement? I found a fan that has only live and neutral connectors so as you can guess that’s no good or complicated to wire?
What is the function of the black /yellow connection? My best guess is switching however I would appreciate advice as to whether I proceed or call in a sparky.
Thanks Mark

Your fan has a timed overrun - i.e. when you've finished in there, and turn off the light, it carries on running for a while.

So you need a replacement fan with the same function, and it too will have 3 connections - permanent live, switched live and neutral.

PROBABLY the yellow & black are the switched lives, but you should check by looking at the light or the light switch, or by referring to the instructions for the existing fan.

Thanks for your prompt reply.
I have seen fans with a timer are they the same as the timed overrun you mention? I have also looked at the pullcord and that has a live a switched live red with black sheath? and an earth.

Thank again Mark

Yes - timer fan.

And it's taking it's supply from the light, as per the 1st/2nd diagram in the Wiki article.
