SFK was correct in his presumption and my question is, would I require the services of a plumber to carry out the procedure?

You don't have to use a plumber if you don't want to.

Just follow the instructions word for word.

It needs introduced properly, filled through the system and tested, left for the correct time and then most importantly flushed several times and tested again to ensure no chlorine is left anywhere in the supply pipework or cistern.
