My kitchen floor is concrete and there is a hollow near the exterior door caused by traffic. The area to be filled is like a short passage way just over a door's width and only a few feet long, so it only has to be brought up level with the kitchen floor at one end. The area to be filled is less than half a square metre, about 25mm at the deepest, tapering to nothing at the kitchen end. The worn area is mostly concrete but there is a granite block adjacent to the door.

Is there anything more economical and practical that self-levelling compound? That seems very costly for such a small area. Would a 3:1 cement/sand mix be OK? The surface has to be suitable for tiling with ceramic tiles.

to shallow for sand and cement. Try to get some floor repair mortar. Same as smoothing compound but mixed so not runny. Throw it into your hollow and then drag level/flat with some timber or something. Then polish smooth with trowel 15 mins later with light mist of water over it.
