I have 2 internal sash windows which i sanded down and stripped back a fair bit of old crumbly paint. As a temporary measure i just glossed over the windows to get them done as it was part of a new extension, with the idea to go back and really look at the issue when time allows.

Well i have the time so i wondered do i really need to strip back the wood to the wood or could i just fill the larger sections ? If so what product would i use?

You would have to sand the whole surface, then apply two part wood filler to the craters. Then sand, then paint. Use primer and undercoat as necessary.
