fixed shower heads

are the arms on fixed shower heads universal? Or do diffferent companies have different fitments?

The reason I ask is that I would like to purchase a square head fixed shower which has a right angle arm. I'd like to swap the arm for a vertical arm that comes down from the ceiling.

Many are 1/2" bsp, but a lot are not, including some nonstandard pipe/thread sizes.
