Hi all,
The concrete dining room floor in my son's house has sunk in one spot by about 1 1/2" to 2". He has had a quote of £2000 to dig up the old floor and re concrete. Because the floor doesn't seem to have moved any more over the last few months I thought that I could level it with cement. The problem I have is now that I have got the carpet up I can see that the floor is covered with an old type hard plastic tiles. Even when I lift a tile a black adhesive is left on the concrete floor. Does anyone have any suggestions. Should I chisel up all the tiles and hope that the cement will bond or is there anything other than cement that I could use to level the floor on top of the tiles.

Hope you can help[]

I had exactly this problem last year, and having checked with a builder friend I did the following:

Using coarse wire wool, scrub the tiles using white spirit and wipe dry. This removes the surface shine.
Then apply PVA and let dry.
Then use B&Q or similar self-levelling compound - the type you mix with water.
Apply the compound in layers as it says on the bag, about 10mm each time. When each layer is dry give it another coat of PVA and then another layer of compound.

You can build it up very easily - I levelled my floor that had sunk in one corner by two inches like this. It finished well, and took gripper strips for carpet well. No problems at all.

Purists will probably tell you it won't work, but I'm here to say that I've done it and it does!!!

Hope this helps.
