A female aquaintance is having problems with her toilet not flushing properly. The siphon has been replaced twice in recent months by a local plumber but when flushed the cistern only half empties. The cistern is marked as having a 7.5ltr capacity. The top of the siphon is level with the mark on the cistern. It is approx 8inches high. Would a taller siphon give a better flush? TIA

Depending on the syhon make, you may find there is a bung/cap which is used to change the amount of water (or water height inside the cistren) flushed by creating an air break. If the cap has been placed in the wrong hole, depending on the water level inside your cistern, you may not get enough water to flush.

2 options if this is the case, move the cap which is normaly be on the side of the syphon. Failing that can you adjust the water height with the ball valve? If it's a metal arm, you can bend it up, or plastic arm's normally have a nut which act's as a stopper which can be wound in to alow the arm to travel up further?

Sorry a bit long winded !

Thanks for the reply. Will have a look today re: cap and hole. Can't raise water levevel anymore as it is on the required mark and almost over the top of the siphon.

You could turn off the water supply and flush and then measure the volume of water needed to top it back up to the normal level.

Water Regulations limit the flush volume to a maximum of SIX litres now and its therefore illegal to fiddle to increase the flush over this limit.

To flush properly with six litres a new pan is required as they have a smaller bore to create the same flush velocity.
