Hello...Happy New Year to everyone.
I recently posted in the 'Your Projects' forum outlining what I have in mind for work/gaming setup - https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/living-room-work-hobbie-setup-revamp.640537/.
I just thought it would be best to post the questions I have here so they can be seen by the right people...it does mean reading the project post first to understand what the questions relate to so I appreciate anyone that takes the time to answer my queries. I reckon the answers to the questions will be quite broad too so I'll take every answer on board.
I've also done my own research too of course. But I though I'd be stupid not to actually ask around a DIY forum.
So, main questions really are around materials:
1. What's best?...I sit at the desk at least 15 hours a day (yes I get out), so it needs to be sturdy. I was thinking a 'warm' darker grain....or can that come with treating it?
2. Where is best to source said material around the Yorkshire area? I touched on the subject of my sons disability in the project post....unfortunately, that means I'm a single earner supporting a family of 4 due to my partner having to give up her career to be a full time carer. So expenses need to be low ish....Is there somewhere that may offer cut offs? Otherwise, where is decent? It also means I can't really experiment and I need to get it right first time.
3. Is my idea of a 'floating' desk feasible? If it is, what else do i need to take into account? What is the best way to ensure it won't accidently slip from the battens round the wall?
4. The section at the back will mean I'll need to join the main desk to it, so it slides into the alcove as one piece. What's the best way to do this? I've seen biscuit joints are a popular solution but does that depend on what material I use?
I think that's it for now....I'm sure more will come to me as I go but thank you to anyone that takes the time to answer.
Cheers,
Ben
