My wife's 2002 Focus Zetec has developed a problem with the central locking. Intermittantly the remote control will not open the doors. Total silence when remote key is pressed. Key has had a new batttery. The problem seems to be worse in cold weather. Any suggestions!
Thanks Phil

Hi Phil

Can't help you other than to stay that rather spookily the same has happened to mine in past few days.

For some weeks the doors would lock and unlock on their own while I was driving. Then two nights ago I went to lock the car and nothing.... guessed the battery on the key was flat so locked it manually.

Replaced the battery today and still nothing.... not only that but the button on the dash that opens the boot doesnt work now and the back two doors will not unlock at all!

So either the passengers will have to climb over the front seats or in via the windows ala Dukes of Hazzard.

Be interested to find out how to fix it.... seen lots of mentions on web about this but no solution

The electronic side of the central locking does not work at all it would seem. Therefore the only way to unlock the front doors from the outside is manually with the key... both sides and from inside by pushing the buttons manually. Opening the drivers door does not open the passenger door nor the rear doors which are still firmly locked!

I read somewhere it is to do with fuse number 63 which is part of the fuse box behind the glove compartment but.... these only go up to 62

Where is Fuse 63!!!!!????? and is it the solution.

Hello pheonix, what you have to do is open the glove box, swing it down and youll see the fuse box.undo the two 7mm bolts and push the two white tangs in to release the fusebox from the metal casing.you then need to lower it down and turn it around.there on the fuse box is the lock fuse 20amp(hidden between the wires).best thing to do is fit a fuse and see if it blows.if no check all locks work.which ever one dont you can bet its faulty.if the fuse does blow you can disconnect each door individually either at the motor or on the door opening plug.you will need a few fuses possibly until you isolate which motor is faulty.you may be lucky and all works and fuse dont blow.

This happened to me and I was told to open the key and clean the pads
behind the buttons. This worked fine.

I have a 2001 ford focus and the remote locking stopped working. I put a new battery in the key fob and reprogrammed the key but this has made no difference. Sometimes when driving the tail gate lock releases and the tail gate opens up especially when pulling away from stationary. I then realised that anyone using a mobile phone near to the back of the car can also make the lock release. I then have to get out of the car to shut the tailgate only for it to release again another 20 metres on. This can happen many times in a day.
Can anybody shed any light on these problems.

This problem has been ongoing for about a year now so I have been using the metal key to lock the doors. The other evening the metal key when put into the ignition swith would not allow me to get past the steering lock. I called the AA and they said it was wear on the key. So just a warning to other people with the same problem try not to use the metal key too much on your door locks!

I have a 2000 Ford Focus Ghia - I've had trouble with my doors locking randomly, with which i had to use my remote key to unlock the car as opening my door didnt work, all the passenger doors would open if they pull the handle - but not the drivers!! Then 4 days ago my remote key stopped working so have been having to lock manually. Pulled up to get petrol yesterday - and the doors had locked...and of course my remote key is no longer working! I was locked in my car - getting some very odd looks as i put the window down the turned the engine off and had to let myself out by unlockling from the outside!

I found this forum as i was looking to see if i can change a battery in the key fob (which i have found out from here you can do) but i cant get the key open

Any ideas?? Thanks

This was spot on! I've changed the fuse even though it didnt look like it had gone (once i finally gone into it -it's not easy!) and i heard the locks click instantly!

cost me 65p for 2 fuses - would have cost me much more to get someone to look at it for me!

Cheers!

Thanks to marka356, my central locking stopped working and it was also fuse 63 - which is listed in the handbook but not shown or location described.

It is around the middle of the top of the back of the relay part of the panel, turning the panel round to get access is tricky.

You could try re-programming it using the info in the link below, but it sounds more like an intermittant fault with the remote fob. (eg, dry solder joint, or faulty switch)

As DD says, it could be some sort of intermittant fault with the key; I would have thought that, if it were a programming fault, then it would not work at all.

The battery in SWMBO's 52 Focus key-fob started losing power after about 4 years, but the replacement (poorer quality?) battery seems to be dwindling (i.e. losing range and sometimes appearing not to work) much quicker. I would venture that your problem could be related to the battery/battery contact.

I had similar problem wth my Focus.
I changed the battery and found it did nothing.
I told a chap at work and he said its a common problem on FORDS.
Its a case of built up static in the remote control box in the car.
Follow below

Look under the drivers side dashboard.
Under there attached on the right hand side right is a box which should say SIEMENS.
This is the remote control signal box.
Remove the cables attached to it and leave it for approx 1hr.
Go back to the car after an hour and put the cables back in.
Its an easy job and you cant go wrong.
It will work straight away.
Mines been fine and works perfect since

Same fix as 'happypete'

I'm only bothering to post, as my symptoms were slightly different to those described previously, & hopefully this may help someone else?

Central locking started to be flaky after removing drivers card to fix window regulator problem. Looking back now, I don't know why!

After reading all the excellent postst regarding this problem, and unfortunately having to try most of the suggested fixes before finding the right one, it was the controller under the drivers footwell.

Symptoms were:
Radio fob didn't work at all.
Locking with the key in the lock would lock/unlock intermittently.Sometimes the drivers door only, sometimes all doors.
The car would randomly lock/unlock itself while driving along.

Fixes:
Did the toggling the drivers door switch 6 times. This resulted in being able to lock/unlock all doors reliably when the key was in the drivers door lock.
Did the reprogramming thing described in this thread. This worked as described, but didn't yield any progress.
Did the fuse 63 check, this really p*****d me off, as many of the fuse slots on the front of the panel aren't used, so it could easily have been located there. There's only one reason it's hidden (and not properly documented), and that's the price they charge to check it!
Unpugged the control unit & left in for an hour as recommended. Bingo!!!
I'm not sure why this works, as the battery has been removed at least twice since the problem manifested itself, and I would have thought this would have the same effect. Also, I think a few seconds would probably be OK.
Anyway, this did in fact fix the problem, so yippee!

Thanks to everyone for the information. I'm guessing Ford would have charged a couple of hundred quid, which would probably have included a new controller, as they would have swapped it, rather than just cycling the plugs.

I found an interesting thing on internet for Ford Focus and it worked perfect.

If your key fob won't work but central locking works with key in door try this.

Put key in ignition and turn it to position "I"
Now you have to be quick with this. turn ignition lights on, position "II" and then back to position "I"
Do this 4 times within 6 seconds and you will hear a chime similar to when you open door with lights on.
Once you hear this chime press and hold in one of the buttons on your key fob until you hear the chime again.

Your key fob is now reset. Leave it about 5 seconds and try your fob.
