"Free Safety checks"

Seems every day someone offers a "free safety check"... wiring, water , gas etc... personally i regard them as little more than an opportunity for "them" to get their foot in the door condem everything and flog you something.

cynical moi?... is it just a way of frightening people into spending money?

or a valiable sevice?

It would be a safety check if they could quantify the risk, but since they can't, it's not a safety check.

Old wiring (rubber) breaks down and the cores can short and start a fire.

The modern stuff (PVC) has no lifespan that I know of.

i see... so the wireing check really is just a frightener then (in advertiseing its called, backing up the hurse and letting them smell the flowers)....

Indeed it does have a lifespan, It is hard to put a definitive age on it as so many factors can shorten it's lifespan, such as good or bad installation ie bad location, (ab)use whether the cable has been overloaded for instance. etc etc.

In general 20 years or so is PROBABLY the max for a good installation, periodic checking is the only reliable way of estimating lifespan though.
