My ancient boiler, used for central heating and heating the water, will run OK for a week, then goes out.
I have tried to make the pilot light impinge on the thermocouple (new one fitted recently) and it will stay lit for ever. Until - the main flame ignites, when one can see the flame being 'sucked' away from the sensor. The flames go out in a few seconds - as expected.

What can I do to improve matters? I vaccuumed the jet out and the unit worked OK for a week. Now it is playing up as described above. I am wondering if my 'man' could do any better? n.b. he fitted a new pump a few months back.

Is there something in the switch unit to adjust - apart from the pilot light adjuster.

You should get an Engineer in, this could be due to a blocked heat exchanger causing the flame to lift due to lack of oxygen which you should be aware could be very dangerous (Mr Carbon Monoxide)
