I would suspect it is the temp cont thermostat, but unless you are pretty competent, would suggest you call someone out.

Thanks for that JJ.
Just to update. I found a site
http://www.ransomspares.co.uk/fan_element_article.html I took the Back panel off to expose element and could see strait away that element was gon.. Burnt bulging section. A continuity check confirmed. Luckily it was the type that unscrews from inside the oven, :D so was able to get new element this afternoon and replaced in time for wife to test it with the joint we shoiuld have had yesterday . It was delicious

UPDATE...... old post ...

The element I put in april 2007 has burned out today ...duhh..

Is There any reason why some ovens burn out elements quickly? Its a Hotpoint bu72 double oven.. last one we had (same model) at old place worked fine for several yrs no probs.. could it be a dodgy thermostat.?
I didnt take out xtra warrantty. (the oven is only 3yr 6mth.)

was it a genuine element or a cheap look a like, cost of a good one about 30 quid under this price no good

Actually It's not a genuine part. Phoned round a few but all said hotpoint not in stock. The closest to me quoted £37.00 when I asked if thats the gen hotpoint he said oops no actually it's £29.99
the make is called Qualtex. (this is the same type which has just burnt out)
Wierd that it has burnt out in exact same spot as the original factory one.

I fitted it tonight and tried it with oven (cooking)thermometer, set oven to 100 and red light went out when the cook thermo reached bout 95 deg.

cheers
john
