i`am buying a second hand pug expert van, the garage in getting it from are selling it to me with a new M.O.T and they say they will service it, this includes a cam belt change, i know its important to change the belt every 71000 or so, is there any way to check if the belt really has been done?? other that it looking new?

Go round there while they're doing it
They usually have part numbers and markings round the outside of the belt which will wear/fade over time. If it's brand new, should be bright and shiny writing on it. Not really a sure fire way of knowing, but better than nothing!

Tell the garage you want to see the old belt (and jockey wheels if applicable) so that you can see what they have done. The local garage that did the belt change on my Escort van did this without even being asked!

Whose to say the belt they show you is off your car van . best way is to mark old belt with altra violet pen before they change it but if its new you should tell

it will be pretty obvious if the belt was old or new, as someone already said the markings on the outside of the belt will fade with time, also the rubber on the inside (touching the pulleys) will be cracked and the edges frayed if the belt has not been changed.
y not ask them to supply a warranty with the job, that way if they dont replace it and it does go then they are liable for any repair costs
