How deep should gravel be?

I'm going to replace a small weed-infested front garden with some gravel.

It's been advised on websites that it should be 4" inches deep but that 'seems' to be when it's expected to be walked on.

This will not be walked on but purely for cosmetics and easy maintenance.

Should it still be 4" or is it not necessary to have it that deep?

Thank you.

I understand it should be at least 3x the size of the gravel deep, so 10mm gravel should be at least 30mm deep etc.

4 inches of round gravel would be a nightmare to walk on!

As always paving expert is the Bible on this sort of thing

Thank you.
That's quite a bit less.....and much cheaper!
4" did seem quite deep, maybe the website wants me to buy more!

Are you going to put weed guard under the gravel? That makes a big difference in reducing the weeds that sprout through.
