Please don't laugh, I'm completely lost on diesels.

The new filter I've just got doesn't have a thread, so it doesn't unscrew, and I can't see any bolts/screws.
So how do I get old one off?
What do I have to undo/remove first?
Do I have to do anything special to avoid getting air in the fuel system?
Is there anything vital I need know?
