Mum want's me to put up curtain rails (the old ones are gone and the wall has been replastered after the insertion of new windows). Is it as simple as drilling holes in the right place, and screwing the rail holder into position? I want to know how to pick the right drill bit (just a bit smaller than the screw? do packs of screws give a diameter or does it have a special jargon name?) and what might go wrong (walls crumbling)?

depends what wall is made of.

if its brick, use red rawl plugs, 5.5 mm masonary bit, 1 1/2 inch Number 8 screw

drill hole push in plug, hold curtain rail up, screw in screw

if its platerboard you will need cavity fixings.

worst case, you hit a water pipe or cable that should not be there.

oh, spirit level is usefull, to make sure it is level

as its your first time get some one to hold other end of curtain track while you mark it (the fixing holes)
