how to hang a door the other way?

In our bathroom we want to hang the door to open against the wall, as at the moment it opens into the bathroom and takes up space, how do we go about doing this.

Jane,

before you do anything about swapping the door around, think about the light switch and whether you also want to move this as it may be behind the door once you've moved it.

Sometimes a (straightforward job) has other implications!

If you are hanging the door on the same side of the door jamb (the wood that the door closes against) you will have to reverse the door (inside facing out) otherwise you will have to fill the hole in the door where the door catch/lock was situated.

This means the catch will have to be reversed (or replaced depending on type).

Then mount the hinges on the other side. 'Letting in' the hinges using a sharp chisel.

Then offer the door up to the frame, using a door stop to bring the door up to the correct height (for clearance) and mark the position of the hinges against the frame. Then let in the hinges to the door frame

Once let in, prop up the door using the door stop and drill one pilot hole in each hinge and put in one screw (use a pozidrive screw initially - much easier and quicker)

If the door opens/closes satisfactorily, then pilot drill the rest of the holes and put in the rest of the screws, then replace the pozi screws with slotted (if thats what you are using)

The reason for doors opening inward is to prevent accident,if the doors open outward,people will walk into it from the hall area.

whilst on the subject, why are front doors inward opening?

Is it to do with security?

No,it to do with safety but no written rules about this.

My hall is approx 33' long and 7 doors and if I have all doors opening into the hall,the chances are people will walk into the edge of the door.

Sorry I just mis-read your post,

The front door as you say it's to do with security,if you have the door opening outward,you can get a crowbar on edge to force the door open plus rain can get in the side gap.Also to prevent the wind blowing the door of the hinge.
