I wish to link up two computers in the same room, for data transfer, this is a one off, i don't need it long term, could i simply plug a cat5 cable in to each computers ethernet port, would this work or is there a diffrent way, ie easier.

Yes, this is possible. You would need a crossover type, rather than a straight forward ethernet patch cable.

I'm no pc expert, but I've got a crossover cable, works ok but transfer rate is really slow. Is this the norm or is it my pc's :?:

What speed are they connecting to the network? My desktop computer shows it connected to the hardwired part of the network at 100Mbps, doesn't seem too bad for normal file transfers (I use a network hard disk for sharing.) Big files can take a while but thats life!!
