How do you properly tile around a door frame when the backer board and tiles are positioned above the door frame? Should the tiles extend beneath the architrave so that it can be placed on top of the tiles, or should the tiling stop where it meets the architrave?

Tile to architrave not under it.
There will be a gap between the door frame and the architrave due to the increased thickness of the tile backer board. Do you have any suggestions on how to install the architrave in this situation?

You could remove the architrave and pack it out to the same thickness as the backer board and tiles. You can either pack out the door liner or pack out the leading edge of the architrave. The latter will be easier, but might look odd. Use wood glue though
