i am a little unclear

1 ) if a competent registered person was to replace a consumer unit .. would he test every single circuit or just a peercentage and issue installation certificate.

2) if just a new socket was added in a kitchen ... would he test just this one circuit and issue installation certificate

3) if main bonding wasnt in place could you proceed with step 2 (adding a new socket) without main bonding being in place

another thing that puzzles me

why if changin an old rewireable CU for a new one must everythin be tested before energising the circuit.... because surely the new CU with rcd's and mc'bs is 100 times safer than old rewirables

You will generally find that you will get a better response if you bother using the spellchecker and not resort to txtspk.

Replacing a CU is generally done to upgrade or improve. To do this properly you should make sure that whatever you do will leave the installation in a satisfactory condition so

1) If they were competent they would test everything beforehand to see that the installed CU was adequate and test afterwards to prove it was

2) You test what you want to be accountable for - so you test the circuit containing your new socket - but as its not a new circuit you would only need a MWC.

3) See above - I would always bring bonding up to current standards before doing any work and ensure customer knows this is my quote.

Re - the old v new CU - cannot be certain of that until you test - testing is there for a reason.

Not so.

A Minor Works Certificate is used for work that does not extend to the provision of a new circuit.

Don't confuse BS 7671, Part P, special locations and locations giving rise to increased risk.

Full test

Inspect, check earthing and bonding, test Ze and this circuit's characteristics, bring this circuit up to current standards and certify (with MWC) the work done on this circuit only.

No.
(Definitely no.)

What if all the circuits have problems? You'd then be altering and reconnecting an unsatisfactory installation... how would you certify that?
