Installing plasterboard above kitchen wall units

Hi,
I have a run of kithcen wall units, that also includes a corner unit.
The space above the units is about 24mm, and the total length I need to put in is about 4m.
I'm not sure how to get started with this.
I will need to create some kind of framework, but not sure whether to attach it to the wall unit tops AND the ceiling (artex - stippled), and how to do then attach the plasterboard to the framework etc.
I obviously don't want too much extra weight bearing down on the units..
any tips, suggestions or advise would be appreciated.

it is 24cm, not mm!

Do you mean you want the false wall to be flush with the front of the units?
