Hello chaps, I want this desk from argos which cost £180.

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6197247.htm

Its the Sandalwood Effect Executive Desk.

What would the cost be for making a desk like this in say veneered sandlewood or similar?

Also is it just me looking in the wrong places for a decent selection of veneered wood?

Ive been to wickes and they sell only beech and white vennered chipboad. And they only have one type of beech effect wood which Im not too fond of.

Ive been to b&q and they dont sell anything decent. Where else could I go and what would I be spending approximately on the wood.

Cheers/.
:D

At the end of the day it's only chipboard. Maybe you could get 2 cheaper drawer units and then you've only gotta knock up a top.

No Ikea near you?

"Sandalwood Effect " That means chipboard with a plastic coating on it. Horrible stuff. If you have a look for Office furniture (not home stuff) you should be able to find something much better - you often see surplus stocks e.g. on ebay. Look in your yellow pages and see if there are any office equipment dealers near you.

My local timber merchant had some hardwood desk tops that were so cheap I bought one as a ramp to get a m/bike into the back of a van

You would need 3-4 sheets of veneered MDF to make that, so that will take up you £180 not leaving much for hardware , finishing and time costs.

Look in yellow pages for panel specialists, you can get about 25 different wood grain effect chipboards, a dozen or so off the shelf real wood veneer on MDF and virtually any wood custom veneered at a price.
