is old plastic floor tile harmful?

we're about to bring up old wall to wall carpet and put down hard wood floors.....there are very old (40 years old)but intact plastic floor tiles under carpet......could these tiles be emitting harmful gas or can we safely replace carpet by covering old tiles with new oak?

No problem re emissions with tiles except initially to person gluing down. Are you sure floor is level enough to properly support new wooden floor? Could some tiles be loose?
