Japanese acer or similar.

I had a japanese acer in the corner of my garden which did not come back this year I think it had something to do with the bad winter we had.
Anyway I am looking for a small tree to replace it, something that likes to be shaded and will only grow slow.
Has anyone any ideas I want something low maintenance and less pricey than an Acer. I paid £70 2 year ago for my acer.
Please help
