Joining clay and plastic soil/cutting earthenware

The top of the earthenware section is vertical and was attached (until 10 years ago) to an asbestos stack.When this was was removed the builder chipped it out and damaged the clay section .It needs to be but straight to permit the use of a clay/plastic adaptor.As the clay section is likely to be brittle which is the best way to make a square cut?I imagine careful use of an angle grinder is needed.
 
Many thanks for advice-we cut through earthenware sweetly and used a couple of adaptors and introduced a branch access with rodding eye
