I'd love to have laser eye surgery but wish they could do it with you knocked out :(

My neice had it done about 6 weeks ago, she said it was totally painless and the best thing she as ever done.

It cost just under a grand for both eyes, apparently it is only suitable for certain conditions. She is 22 and as worn glasses for about 5 years. Unfortunatly it is apparently unsuitable for most age related sight problems. I am 51 and sometimes need glasses, just for reading, they said they can't help me.

Ken, why don't you just make an appointment to see what its all about, I'm sure they will have testimonials from people much more apprehensive than yourself.

You don't have to commit to anything, and you may find that you are not suitable anyhoo, which will stop you fretting once and for all!

So, has the cost come down? I thought it was about a grand an eye?

Ken, whilst I don't know a lot on the subject, annecdotally it does appear to be quite well tolerated and successful. The only thing to bear in mind is that the technology is only about 10 years old so long term side effects are not know.
As mentioned before it very much depends on what problem you have and how bad it is but as MMJ mentioned it won't hurt to get it looked into.
I thought I'd see what literature was out there on this and the most recent review I could find was in the New England Journal of Medicine:

Use of Lasers for Vision Correction of Nearsightedness and Farsightedness - Wilson SE - N Engl J Med. 2004 Jul 29;351(5):470-5

Unfortunately I wasn't able to look at the text online but if you go to your library (if its a big one) they should have a copy. If I get a chance I'll have a look for you.
Also most opticians produce a leaflet, however as with most of these they tend to gloss over the science and the complications.
Hope it helps.

MMJ. I have checked and she definately got both eyes done for a few coppers under a grand.

The charges probably relate to what you have done or what they can get away with.

If you think about it, there is a possible conflict of interest when you ask an optician if you are suitable. You are in effect saying I don't want to pay you for glasses or tests anymore! Especially when most opticians don't do the op's.

I also have a cousin who is an optician who owns 2 or 3 shops. She had her own eyes done and also recommended the place where my niece went. It wasn't Boots, I can find out but a think it was laserline or something similar.

You do have to take great care. My brother-i-l is an Optometrist in Hants and has many horror stories about certain retailers like Shoes and Vishun Exspresh. I have proved it by getting an eye exam from him (25mins) and comparing his results with 5 others. It is, no pun intended, a real eye-opener.

had a few clicks around and found this.

At least it will give you real peoples accounts, rather than some sales pitch!

David, after looking around a few sites, I would say she got a bargain!

My sis i nlaw had it done 12 months back, about £1000 for both eyes. She sed no problems at all. Not much pain, just eyes abit watery after it.
A guy in work had it done recently on a special 2for1 offer !!! lol so him and his mate had it done, 4 eyes for £1000 !! lol

Ken - in the mid nineties, I had a frenuloplasty. Look it up!!

I didn't really want to stay in overnight, not liking hospitals too much, so asked if it could be done with a local. Sure, said the surgeon. Where do you stick the needle? I asked, thinking that the nerve ending was in the thigh. Where do you think? he replied.

Needless to say, I stayed overnight!!

Frenulo: so to do with the frenulem
Plasty: Well, a rhinoplasty is having your nose cut down... So I think I can guess what a frenuloplasty is...

Bloomin' painful! OUCH!!!

Local anaesthetic in your wee-man? Luxury! Try having a deranged A&E consultant hack at your fiveskin with surgical scissors with NO anaesthetic!

Always fun: I had an ex ring up and tell me she had chlamydia, so I ran straight down to the clinic and had EVERY test, to be certain (not really unpleasant, I think everyone should have one between partners). The results came back negative, but my mates told me there had been a programme on TV about it the night before she rung. Suspecting a vindictive hoax, I rang the ex back and said "Cheers a bunch, turns out I have got chlamidya!". The woman test is FAR more unpleasant (the nurse had shown me the size of the swab they stick in ladies). So I am hoping it was her playing a practical joke, and that she got swabbed to make sure AFTERWARDS!

You are likely to feel a little sore for a week or so.

OBVIOUSLY written by a woman. I think I might submit a description of childbirth to them.

On very rare occasions it might pinch a bit, but this is seldom painful enough to mention.

Ever noticed how when something is to do with male genitalia the descriptions are all about the dangly bits with useless bits of skin, with outpatient surgeries and some local anaesthetics? Yet when it is female genitalia it is all about sensitive bits and epidurals, with a few weeks off work. Men and women have essentially the same bits, useless bits of skin and all, just packaged differently.

Now, I have heard ladies bits described as things like a "beautiful flower opening up". In these days of equal opportunities I want them to start describing man bits with terms like "the magic fireman" and "Corporal Cucumber, standing to attention" ;)

Anyway, back to the lasers

My better half is a specialist nurse in sexual health. She tells me that recent developments in screening technology, mean that tests can now be taken from a urine sample for both gonorrhoea and chlamydia. However the old ways are cheaper and can also test for other infections.

Without going into to much detail it is important (apparently) that you give full details of sexual activity, to make sure the correct tests area taken from the right area. Put bluntly you could have these infections in say the throat and it may no show in a test on the genitals.

Julie has a top job in this area, if any of you have any doubts I am available for tests in plain brown envelopes and little bottles, for my usual fee!
