Turn gas off, break wall to show a foot or so of pipe, call a corgi who knows how to mend a lead gas pipe. Not all will.

I would say that hardley anyone will, blimey its been years since I swept a joint.

Am I right in thinking that lead is now an inappropriate material for gas supply though? It may be worth getting a CORGI to replace the lot asap

Sure is corgiman, under no circumstances must lead be used for gas, however if existing and in good condition the engineer can repair or connect to it using taff joints to the copper.

It depends a bit whether you drilled through the back as well as the front of the pipe!
If it's just the front and the pipe is exposed it's very simple. More of a job if it needs copper putting in. Might be easiest then to use 2 lengths of copper and a slip joint between them.

Of course if it's a disused pipe then it can be capped.

WOOOOOOOO do NOT do that as leadlocks are definatley NOT an appropiate fitting

Got called to house for a gas re-run the whole house was in lead apart from the run to to boiler that someone possibly 5 years previous had tried to solder copper to lead under the floor boards. One mourning the customer got out of bed lit up a cigarette the bedroom window blew out and he spent three months in mount vernon hospital for burns, don't even think of repairing it needs a complete gas re-run in copper

Who said anything about using a leadloc?

You can of course solder a piece of copper pipe into a lead pipe and then use normal fittings for gas. You can for example T into a lead pipe. Or cap one off.

Lead pipe installations are often so poor though that I'd prefer to replace the lot. I daresay we've all seen lead water pipes start to weep where they go over something like a damp sleeper wall.
