Hi can any one help we have recently moved into a new property where downstairs there is a large long lounge about 9ft x 25ft that used to be two seperate rooms. We want to lay laminated flooring in this room but on removal of the old carpet we have discovered where the two used to meet there is a large slab of concrete which i presume used to be an old fireplace and on both sides of this the floor drops down by 1 to 2 inches does anyone know how we can try levelling this up so its level in the whole room?

Only idea I can come up with is to batten the floor. with laminated (Plastic melamine) you the have to install plywood on top of the battens first, cause Melamine flooring isn't load-bearing. If you would go for solid or thick Wood-Engineered flooring (minimum 18 - 19 mm thick) you can install the boards on to the battens by secretely nailing them.
