hi all
Complete idiot/novice here. I begun replacing a light fitting with a pendant. Halfway through install I realised that the new fitting did not have all the requisite parts. I have tried to rewire the old fitting but it isn't working. Well the light works and the previous light on the circuit work but the rest of the lights in the flat do not. Can anyone help me correct this error?
Thanks for any help given - and I rightly accept any abuse too.

Well for starters that neutral (black wire) is hanging out. make sure your connections are neat and tidy and tight, no copper showing, and try the light again. As long as you have put the black wire with the marker on the L to the lamp and NOT with all the other black wires, there will be no BANG !

Thanks. They were neater but I have been messing.

Just to clarify, when you say black wire/neutral with the marker on the L, to which wire are you referring? I can't see the marker

Hi, it's difficult to see from your picture do you have 3 black wires ?

If you have another pendant light x check the wiring from that.

DS

no just two black. two earths and three reds.
I have checked every other light in the flat, there is one other similar fitting and have tried to replicate the wiring in that. I will take a video of it so you can see better.

I have tried both of those methods - I think the file is too large. I am having the same issue with my video.

Hi, can you try re connecting the two neutrals as a starting point. Does the light work with its respective switch ? If yes, leave the light on and try the other lights in the flat.

Thanks,

DS

I have just neatened it back up again and it is working, as are the rest of the lights in the flat.:D

Echo - re: the reds, it is difficult to tell with the plastic facia whether it is a single or a cable with two reds as the length of the cable is quite short.

only thing is now it won't switch off - it is on permanently? :(
all other lights operational as normal

Yes I would expect that.

One of the reds should be connected to the brown and the remaining two should be connected together using the middle terminal block.
if there is a single red wire, that will be the one to connect to the brown.

DS

It would be if we charged for our service (y)

Did you forget that irritating bracket from Ikea that is an extra 50p to enable you to hang your new light ?

Regards,

DS
