Had my first attempt at putting up lining paper over the weekend and thought I had done a good job of it until tonight! Painted over it, and just on one of the seams, the paper has bubbled either side of the join for about 50cm :(

2 questions, 1: what caused this so I don't do it again. I get a feeling I pushed the paper too close together and the paint made it *buckle* so to speak and 2: what's the best way to fix it. I thought of carving out a thin 1mm strip, pasting the bubble back down and then using filler to fill in the cut out strip?

Any advice really welcome!

TIA

The cause of this can be because you may not have given the paper enough time to soak up the wallpaper paste before hanging it.

I had a similar problem and then read some posts here. Next lot, I let the paper soak for about 15 minutes, no more bubbles after painting.

The bubbles in my first piece don't sound as bad as yours, were in a corner and "disappeared" after the paint dried. Not ideal i know but not visible now.

I was tempted to cut a hole in it and fill with wallpaper paste but decided against it. I'm sure others will have a view though.

  I put the paper straight up after pasting it!

Will be more patient next time :D

Bubbling can be caused if the wall underneath has spots were the old paint has come away leaving patches of plaster which the paste soaks into and comes back to the paper when painted.
The paper stretches when wet with paint but it usually shrinks back when it is allowed to dry naturally.
Dont be tempted to prick the bubbles or cut them out. Wait until the paint is dry before doing anything.

Thanks for the tips.

The bubbles were still there after the paint had dried unfortunately, so I cut them out (little strip) and filled with filler. I'm happy with the result (finally!) but lesson learned  :D
