i was thinking of trying those mdf panels that have been routed to look like tongue and groove to replace tiles around a sink and behind a cooker.

Are they more cost effective than tongue and groove?

Also, assuming satinwood and then yacht varnish, is there anything i need to be aware of due to proximity to sink and elec cooker?

TIA

Make sure you paint all the bare edges of the mdf, then make sure the joint between the worktop and the cladding is sealed with silicone.

mdf are more fire resistance than wood.
