So we've just done our missed coat of the landing and stairs we did a 50-50 mix using Leyland contract matt. The idea was to do the mist coat and see the imperfections and I think I've attached some photographs which expose some of these imperfections. What should we do next? Do you think it needs sanding in parts or should we just crack on and put the first coat on.

I've attached several images of both the walls and some other minor imperfections, I would be grateful if anyone could give me any advice on any or all of them.

Fill and sand all dings. Sand down the wall corner edges to get sharp lines. Sand out any lumps and bumps. Cut back the tape peeking out around the door frame with a sharp blade, use a straight edge to help. Fill and sand around it where needed. Mist coat again. Then top coat.

I think you've got a fair bit of prep to do before you top coat.

Forgot to say, using an orbital sander is best to get the surface as flat as poss.

It is a poor plastering job on the whole, I agree. But I've had similar and worse and been able to salvage it. It will take up quite a bit of time as it is fiddly work but you can turn it around.
