Hi guys.

I have spent a while Googling the code number on the MB of a PC I have been given.

I have eventually discovered it it is an EPOX EP-9DA3.

I have had a fruitless time trying to find out what RAM it will take.

Can anyone more knowledgeable than me in AMD MB's put me out of my misery please?

I also need a HDD. Any tips for best brand or offers at the moment?

Cheers!

EP-9NDA3(I,J,+) maybe? DDR. Expensive..

As for HDDs, Western Digital. Don't forget that OEM drives do not come with screws or cables.

Thanks, Monkeh.

You're right, as ever! I missed out an "N" and there is a "+" after it as well...

Have just looked up on Ebuyer. Crucial kits of 2GB, £70 apiece.

So 4GB = £140. Plus a HDD @£50, may as well buy a whole new PC??

Whaddya think?

For that sort of money, indeed, you may as well buy or build a new machine for about £300-350.

For a little more than the cost of those bits, I could buy this off the shelf:

The thing is Monkeh, I don't know how good the AMD system that I have been given is. Based on what you know about the age of the RAM, could my second hand system be a better spec than the new one above?

And could the second hand system run a 1 TB HDD and Win 7?

So many questions.....

That system is fairly basic, but it'll grind your old AMD box into dust.

And yes, the AMD system could handle a 1TB HDD and Win 7, but it's not worth the outlay.

Hmm.

Was given this system by a friend in return for a little fault finding on his electrical system.

Dilemma alert!!!

Thanks again, M. Much appreciated.

EDIT: How about fitting only 1GB of RAM and a second hand HDD and setting it up for the kids? Maybe put Linux on it??

Then I'd look at some second hand RAM instead of forking over for new stuff. I'd buy a new HDD though.

Can get Crucial 1GB for 25 quid s/h.

WD 500GB HDD for 27 quid new.

Will try those components in the machine & fire it up, see what happens!

Have been told everything else is AOK, but have no idea.

Thanks again Mr M.

OK. I have now bought from ebay a s/h memcard, now fitted and a HDD.

The HDD is here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160511047067

I emailed the seller & he assured me this would connect up to the MB.
I have found the SATA connector in the PC. This is straight-forward to connect.

But on the HDD are two other groups of connections, one of pins and another group of connections on the edge of the PCB.

What do these connect to?

Thanks for your help.

If it's an SATA drive it should have a data connection to match the SATA port on your board. Other than that, it will only need power.

If it doesn't have an SATA data connection it is not an SATA drive.
