Could anyone give me an idea what this pipe might be? It's sticking out of the ground about 0.5m from the back wall of my house. It seems to be capped off with a wired-shut cap or something. I'm hoping it's not gas - but I'm not sure.

The problem is that I've come to lay a new lawn where a flower bed was and found it, and it sticks up well past the level of the new lawn! :(

What size is it ?

Is it definately a pipe and not solid rod with the top having been hammered and thus larger diameter ?

To me it looks like a ( redundant ) ground rod for providing the Earth for the electrics in the house.

( too slow typing )

Yup, that's an old rod. Might be worth checking everything is in order at the service head. Did the supply get altered to a TN-C-S or TN-S arrangement? A quick photo of the electricity meter would confirm

Thanks guys - I didn't try to pull it up or anything just in case.

This is the wiring around my meter:

Appears to be a redundant rod then. You can try pulling it out.
