I recently posted this question on another forum header, but was sent packing and told to post under the "Wood" section, so here goes...

I am going to be moving shortly to a house whose kitchen I believe may have been used to make the Last Supper :). As such I would like to know what to budget for when getting the kitchen redone.

Details are:
The room is 3.5 x 3.0m, and it is a u shape.
I am looking to install nice cupboards / shelving units along the whole of the u, with a built in cooker / stovetop - I guess at about 8 or 9 metres of cupboards & worksurface.
Additionally I am looking at wall units on one side of the u, which goes around a corner, and hides the boiler unit (about 4 or 5 metres)Additionally, I would like to tile the floors with a nice stone / ceramic square shape tile, and also to redo the wall tiles, and finally to paint.

Can anyone tell me (roughly) what this will cost me to have installed proffesionaly ?
I appreciate that it is a very general question, but I just want to know if my budget of £3500 to $4000 is about right (obviously dependant on quality of the units & floors I choose !)

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!

Hi, that really is not as easy to answer as you may think. sorry. It will firstly depend on where you get your units, what quality they are, how many and of what style. If you want cornice, pelmets etc thats more.

You will need an electrician nowadays (due to a regulation called part 'P') to wire up new sockets. Then there is the cost of plumbing. what tiles you go for, etc etc etc.

If you are sensible and get a local chippie in, he will usually be cheaper than a sepcialised firm, just confirm he has ALL the kit for kitchen fitting.

Then it's entirley down to you.

Realsitically 3 - 4 grand SHOULD be enough but you are far better off, getting a design drawn up (even if you do it yourself), working out roughly how many units are involved and what sort. And then getting estimates. Many chippies will work out a charge based on a "per unit and worktop basis"
So for example £30 per base unit, £20 per wall unit. £30 per miter in a worktop and £100 to cut the worktop and plumb in in a sink.

As for your floor, I belive the going rate for floor tiling is about £20 - £30 per sq metre, though tilers will be able to confirm that for you.

I'm sorry if I sound a typical tradesman here, but It is REALLY hard when somebody says "just give me a basic price for a kitchen..."
