Having diagnosed faulty heater element causing RCD trips, and bought new element, am seeking assurance about fitting.

It seems that element is held in by tightening central nut to draw integral backplate into neoprene washer.

Would welcome advice on removing old element. Presumably loosen nut and just prise out fitting. Or is there some other trick?

Don't want to damage anything!

You can remove the nut and push the stud right through into the drum. This will enable you to pull the element part way out and get better access to the rubber grommet. Start at one end of the grommet and gradually prise it out with a screwdriver. Fitting the new heater is a similar technique but its best to just have the nut on a few turns so you don't lose the stud inside the drum. An old worn screwdriver is ideal as it won't cut the new grommet.

Thanks fido for the reassurance.

Have completed job and everything went OK.

One thing I didn't expect was that the element is held in location by a bracket fitted to the base of the drum. Because of build up gunk around the element it was quite stiff to remove even after I had loosened grommet etc. Also, the securing bracket scoured off the gunk as I removed the element, leaving the residue in the drum, which was quite tricky to remove - old coat hanger suitably bent did the trick!

Not sure about your machine but the retaining brackets don't normally need to be disturbed, the element can slide in and out of the bracket. :?

for what its worth on a hotpoint the bracket is attched to the heting element, so does need swapping over
