I am currently converting a barn, and just starting first fit. I would like to check a few things with you guys....

1) I have split the light circuit, so that its left and right of the house, rather than upstairs / downstairs is this OK??

2) Regs say that all wiring has to be accessible, But I am using a ring of down lighters etc in the bedrooms so I need a rose (for the connections) but didn't want it showing on the ceiling or walls - how you you pros deal with this? Do you put them in the wall with an access panel?

3) I am also adding some strip lights (the type that you get under kitchen cabinets etc)... Now, in the kitchen I would have a fuse spur with a cable coming out to power them, but the ones in the bedrooms will be fixed to beams, therefore, how to I wire them in i.e. do I need a surface (ugly!) junction box, or can you guys recommend another way of doing it?

Many thanks in advance.

Dave

Are you sure you meet the requirements of a fundamental regulation calling for "good workmanship by competent persons"?

I dare say I won't be the last to pose this question.

Is this in either England or Wales?

Isn't it a bit late in the day to be asking such fundamental design decision questions as this?

Don't you think that you should have ensured that you had this level of knowledge before starting an entire electrical installation?

All wiring?

Why are you using a rose for non-pendant lighting?

Why? You're converting a barn, so you have complete freedom to design circuits properly, and to have as many as you like.

Why do you think you need a junction box at all?

I recommend this way. Check that they can do pyro, as that's probably the neatest way to install exposed cabling on beams.

Given your questions it is abundantly clear that your knowledge is not yet sufficient for this work.

Yes it could become so, yes you can learn, and yes, asking questions here can be part of the process, but asking basic questions like these in relation to work that's in progress is not the way to ensure that you learn everything you need to know. You'll only ask about things you realise you don't know, so what about your "unknown unknowns"? What if you completely fail to find out about something important because you have absolutely no idea it exists?

IMO the only responsible advice you should be given is to get someone competent to do the electrical work for you.
