Got my new shed neatly piled up in the garage whilst I am waiting for the paperwork to go through at the local commune (needed neighbours approval).

Once I get this I will be laying the concrete base but wondered if I could proceed with preparation of the bare timber now.

I want to change the colour slightly as I do not like the bleached pine look and do not want to varnish. Will I be ok to go with an oil based stain and then use Tung oil after to water proof it fully, or is there a stain I can add to the Tung oil to do the two at once.

And finally if I do this now and then construct the shed (it's one of the log cabin styled ones) will it affect how well it goes together, I can't see it expanding that much? If I prepare each plank now then I would only have to do a few more coats when the whole thing is finished.

Thank you

Nic

You can mix any of the Colron type wood dyes with Danish/Tung oil.

The problem is that if you don't treat the timber regularly it all goes grey.

Cheers Joe.

The constant oiling is not an issue. When I had our outdoor furniture outside (currently in garage next to shed) in South Africa I used to oil it all the time to stop it going dry and used to enjoy it as a form of relaxation.

What is in the coloron stuff, I have not seen them avaialble over here, is it just an oil based stain?

just be aware whatever you put on it will tone it down either slightly or a lot and the wood will darken quite quickly with age

even clear treatment will effect the finnish

i would try a few samples on a spare or hidden bit off wood to see the effect it has
what ever happens just be prepaired for it to get " a suntan " because it will

Thank's Big all.

I expect it to age, my main concern is that I will be building a jungle gym next to it with pre treated wood and I want to get the shed as similar as possible before they all get put up so they can age together. As long as they stay in sync colour wise it will be fine. I want to avoid one looking Blonde and another looking brown and having to wait five years before it does not notice as much.
