can anyone please tell me why my mock orange never flowers.

i planted it 3-4 years ago and it has now grown quiet tall
approx 7 foot and is a good 12-18 inches in diameter.

the first year i did not prune at all
the second in the autumn and the third in the spring

but still not flowers, tons of blackfly, but now flowers

i agree with wabbitpoo. i cant take of the shoots that have flowered until it flowers, so i have been taking the old shoots and leaving the new growth as this seemed most logical,

Hmm,

You're right not the most inspiring article.

Note to self, read article more thoroughly next time.

You should prune the Philadelphus after it was supposed to flower.
Flowers would grow on shoots grown the previous year.
Similar to forsythia which you prune after flowering so flower buts are encouraged rather than wood which is produced if you prune in the autumn-spring.
